Our Shop
Riddle Boatworks is a small wood boat shop with big capabilities and while we don’t do everything in-house, we do most of it. And of the work we don’t perform in-house, we have high quality, reliable sources that perform to our own high standards.
Our range of in-house work includes:
- Structural building and repairs in carvel, lapstrake, and wood-epoxy construction
- Design, mock-up, integration and construction of custom interior features.
- Finish work in traditional paint, and varnish as well as high-tech coatings such as AwlGrip®
- The highest level of fairing work to topsides, bottoms and foils as required by the project and its budget
- Custom joinery of all types, on-board and ashore
- Systems installation, repair and upgrade including electrical, mechanical and plumbing
- Custom hardware
Our Work
We spent our first twenty five years repairing and restoring wooden boats of all sizes and types. And while we will continue that work, our next twenty five years will focus on new construction. What we like best is creating beautiful things, whether by restoring an aged classic or building new. We are continually seeking opportunities to bid on custom construction in designs of any style - in power and sail. And we are now exploring designs of our own for semi-custom wood-epoxy production. Our Standards
Our attention to detail is one of our strengths. In addition to good fits and proper fastening, the ability to produce nicely proportioned components with fair curves and “crisp” edges is what makes anything look “right”, and we have those abilities. Furthermore, our standard is to work to a high degree of accuracy, and we apply that standard to virtually every component we touch. There are parts in any project that are difficult or impossible to see under normal circumstances and it may be tempting to cut corners there. But we believe that when an owner sees good work in the tight spots, he’ll never have to worry about the integrity of the parts he can’t see. And that makes for a long-lived, easily maintained boat that will continue looking good indefinitely.
